1st THURSDAY QUILTERS
What you missed at September's meeting:
Sept's Optional Block Winner: none
You could sure tell it was a holiday weekend coming up...
we had a smaller than usual group so we're carrying over the
September block into October.
Optional Block for October:
Leafy Pattern or Leafy Fabric
12" finished. Ideas: Applique a
leaf (or two), A pattern that creates a leaf, Use fabric with
one or lots of leaves. The top of the tree's the limit :)
Little Fun Project for All: Name
tags
Make a name tag for yourself -
using whatever materials you'd like. No deadline, not required,
just if you have a minute, just have fun with this. This will
help with new members and some of us (clears throat, mumbles
underbreath) older members who are having issues remembering
names. I'm not mentioning any names because I can't remember
any.
Did you know: provided
by Sue McBride
As we were leaving Sue offered us a
stick of gum - not just any gum but Extra
Dessert Delights 'Apple Pie' can you say awesome! Who
needs a real piece of pie now, and it sugar free! Sue then
told us the story of how Wrigley's gum came to be - this was
just too interesting now to share.
William
Wrigley Jr. came to Chicago in the spring of 1891. He
was 29 years old, had $32 in his pocket, and possessed unlimited
energy and great talent as a salesman. He started out selling
soap. As an extra incentive to merchants to carry Wrigley's
soap, he offered them free baking powder. When baking powder
proved to be more popular than soap, he switched to the baking
powder business. One day, Mr. Wrigley got the idea to offer
merchants free chewing gum with each can of baking powder.
The rest is history.
Recap of September
Demo: Moved to October, too.
Demo for October: Flower
Brooch

|
Red Hen Fabrics will
demonstrate how to make one of these Flower Brooches.
They are so beautiful - I have a feeling
there may be a run on these patterns come October 6th!
The demo will be the "Slipper Orchid
Brooch". |
New Member this month - Welcome, Loretta! |
Show and Tell
Our
newest member Loretta, started us off with a U.F.O --
and let me tell you it was amazing!!! She was hoping
to get some ideas for finishing - and I think she came
away with several good options. |
Check out that detail!

Sue
wow'd us once again with a couple of quilts and the cutest
little flower she made using the Kanzashi tool! Too sweet.
|

Sue's first quilt was
a patrotic quilt for her nephew who is in the service.
~ thank you! ~ |

Pretty little Kanzashi flower |
| Karyn
made this adorable little quilt for a neighbor. She used
leftover scraps from a larger version of this quilt. She
used dimple Minky for the back - apparently there is a
story there, maybe we'll get her to spill the beans at
another meeting! IMWK |
 |

She even added her name! That's one lucky neighbor. |
Brenda, left us speechless with this
'Chicken Scratch Windmill' quilt. Definately hit the
5 wow factor! This pattern was shared to her during
a trip to the hills of Kentucky. Kentucky locals would
come in and share various skills i.e. quilting. There
are no handouts, or patterns, just be prepared to take
notes. It was all verbal. Next time I have a class I'm
bringing Brenda to take my notes!

Before everyone could
get away Tracy remembered she did have a show and tell
tucked away... The Hillsboro Chicken and a side of fish
pin cushions - cute and practical!
The pattern for this is available in the Hip
Quick Gift List. |
